Needlepoint FAQ

What is Needlepoint? Needlepoint is an art form dating back hundreds of years. You can create pillows, seat covers, and other decorative heirlooms which can be used everyday. If you use a high quality mono mesh canvas, needlepoint is an extremely durable product. The canvas actually becomes stronger by stitching it. Numerous stitches can be learned, adding endless variety to the finished projects.

Stitch One Kits come complete with all the stitcher needs to create the highest quality needlepoint art.

Why is Zweigart™ canvas so preferred? Zweigart™ canvas has been the most durable needlepoint canvas for 362 years. The mono mesh are woven, not fused at the interstices. This makes for a flexibility that will last lifetimes. The canvas is 100% cotton and comes in different mesh sizes.

Different mesh sizes are available for needlepoint. 10 mesh refers to 10 stitches per inch which is ideal for beginners. Available also are 13 mesh, 13 stitches per inch and for fine work, 18 mesh or 18 stitches to the inch.

What about the yarns? Although many different types of yarns are used today in stitching needlepoint patterns, traditionally and at Stitch One, tapestry wools are the preferred threads.

What were The Berlin Wool Works? During the early part of the 1800's, around 1820, a new type of dye was used in Berlin to dye wool in brilliant colors. These colors complemented embroidery patterns being printed on charted paper. The patterns were hand painted with water colors and sold to the stitcher. The patterns are elaborate and in many cases, three dimensional. They are valued as antique art today, but we believe these patterns should live again on the highest quality canvas available.

The Berlin Wool Works refers to the wool producers and to the pattern makers that came out of this Victorian era.

Stitch One is proud to announce our patented method to reproduce our exclusive line of Berlin Wool Works patterns. We use a new technology in dying the canvas with brilliant colors! You will also receive a chart for your pattern just like the Victorian stitchers would have purchased from Berlin.

The best news is that this method makes needlepoint affordable again! Enjoy making something beautiful!
